Smell my curry.

Well, my mother's cooking her thai curry now, and its aroma is really getting my appetite on again. Here i am, telling my good friend Timothy who is in Germany how awesome my mother's cooking smells but of course he wouldn't know exactly how fantastic the aroma is because, how can you do that over the internet?!

How you wish you are able to get a sample smell of the Chanel perfume you want to purchase online or get a whiff of Rachel Ray's 7 layer casserole through her website? Well, i would think if we give it another say 5 years, we would be able to do that. Maybe not that sophisticated as yet as how our communication through video has evolved to become, but definitely will happen I'm sure.


This concept is labeled as Digital Scent Technology. DST would be the future of mankind's entertainment experience. The intended idea is to scent-enable movies,games, music, animation or any digital media. This would change how people watch videos, online retailing, even how people interact with one another, as it create a more immersive and captivating environment for audiences. Atmosphere, mood, emotion and characters can all be enhanced with scent.

The Power of Scent…
  • makes content extremely immersive and compelling
  • creates mood, such as foreshadowing or ambiance
  • intensifies emotions, such as fear or love
  • establishes place and season
  • helps develop characters
  • gives a heightened sense of reality

There is this device, created by Nuno Teixeira, works like the ink jet printer, though in contrast, it houses 118 cartridges for purification instead of the ink cartridges. The SMELLIT releases the fragrance of the picture on the screen as concentrated "smell gel" that’s evenly distributed by a central fan. So, next time a chef’s cooking a meal on TV, you know how it smells if not how it tastes.
Of course, this is only a concept for the time being, but, taking into consideration the fact that it is a great idea, it probably won't take too long until some large company invests in it and starts mass producing it. Until then, Jamie would have take a flight down to Singapore to smell my mother cooking? Hey how about tasting through the internet?!

Internet II You Say?!

Now we all know what the Internet 1 is so i will not go into that. Today i want to share with you some of the limitations of the Internet 1 and the second era of internet- Internet 2.

There are some limitations to the Internet I:

- Bandwidth Limitations; Bandwidth – Total information that can be sent through network/wire
- Not equally distributed;
slower transfer
- Packet Switching Network—
transfer data: breaking data set into smaller pieces. Each packet has information of where it comes from etc.. Finds routes that is that fastest, and comes together on the computer and computer reads the packet
- Quality of service limitations—
not all packets have same priority
- Network architecture limitations—
slow down; congestion on server
- Language & development limitations—
does not work well with rich information


With that i introduce you to Internet II project!

Internet2 is the second era of internet being built by private corporations, universities, government agencies, built to overcome the limitations of internet I; come projects that have taken off are SETI(distributed processing)

Internet 2 is an advanced networking consortium of 200+ universities, government agencies and private businesses led by the research and education community., collaborating to find ways to make the internet more efficient and faster. The not-for-profit partnership includes leaders from research, academia, industry and government. In 2009, Internet2 member rolls included over 200 higher education institutions,over 40 members from industry,over 30 research and education network and connector organizations,and over 50 affiliate members.

Internet2 operates the Internet2 Network, a next-generation Internet protocol and optical network that delivers production network services to meet the high-performance demands of research and education, and provides a secure network testing and research environment. In late 2007, Internet2 began operating its newest dynamic circuit network, the Internet2 DCN, an advanced technology that allows user-based allocation of high-capacity data circuits over the fiber-optic network.

The Internet2 Network, through its regional network and connector members, connects over 60,000 U.S. educational, research, government and "community anchor" institutions, from primary and secondary schools to community colleges and universities, public libraries and museums to healthcare organizations.

Primary Goals of the Internet II:

§ Create leading edge and very high speed networks for national research community

§ Enable revolutionary internet applications

§ Ensure rapid transfer of new network services and applications

§ Ensure rapid transfer of new network services & applications to broadcast internet community



Benefits of the internet II would include IP multicasting as it enables efficient delivery of data to many locations on a network, latency solutions—diffserv (differentiated quality of service) assigns different levels of priority to packets depending on type of data being transmitted. Also Guaranteed service levels; having ability to purchase right to move data through network at guaranteed speed in return for higher fee.
